Ethical Bean Coffee donates $30,000 to help Guatemalan children

Ethical Bean Coffee is pleased to announce that it will be contributing $10,000 to Child Aid’s FUNDIT program, and $20,000 to Project Somos.

Each December Ethical Bean donates partial proceeds from every bag of coffee purchased to these two organizations that are close to the company’s heart.

With customer’s help, Ethical Bean will now send $10,000 to Child Aid where the money will be used to send even more Guatemalan children to school. As well as admission, the donation will go towards tuition fees, books, and school uniforms.

Recently Child Aid honoured Ethical Bean by renaming the FUNDIT program the “Ethical Bean Scholarship Program”. Read more here.

Project Somos will also receive funding in the amount of $20,000. The money donated will go towards the efforts already underway in building a Children’s Village in Guatemala. This unique village will support orphaned and abandoned children, using a variety of educational tools to encourage the healthy development of children.

In December of 2010, Project Somos, was able to purchase 170 acres of land near the town of Tecpan. This is the first step in constructing the actual village.  The long-term goal of the project is to have the Children’s Village be sustainable, not relying on donations as it matures and grows.

Lloyd Bernhardt, President of Ethical Bean Coffee, and a member of Project Somos’ Board of Directors says, “As a company owner I feel a great sense of responsibility to act and live by our tagline which is “just. better.”  To see the tangible results of our efforts, as well as our customer’s, playing out in the lives of so many children is very rewarding.”
