Asobagri Landslide Update – by Emily Sproule

Since Kim Schachte’s initial blog post about the Santa Cruz Barillas landslide read here, we have been fortunate to receive regular updates from Asobagri Coffee Co-op General Manager Baltazar Francisco Miguel. The landslide occurred in the early hours of the morning on September 20th, when many people were still sleeping in their homes.  15 people were killed and numerous homes and buildings were destroyed.

Over the last week Baltazar has told us that the co-op buildings and land have been deemed uninhabitable and unusable (as pictured above).  This means that new land will need to be found and purchased before construction of any facilities can occur. Over the same time period a small earthquake struck the Barillas region but no additional damage ensued.

Everyone at Ethical Bean Coffee is keeping a close eye on the situation and we will continue to blog about any additional updates that arise in the coming weeks.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read the blog posts, re-post the blog or have donated to the relief efforts.  If you would like to donate to Asobagri while they work to rebuild their co-op please click here.
