UBC celebrates Fairtrade Week!

Today kicks off the first day of Fairtrade Week at UBC – a weeklong celebration of all things Fairtrade running from February 12 – 15th all across campus. Your chance to learn more about Fairtrade, win great prizes, sample Fairtrade certified products and feast on Fairtrade banana and chocolate chip pancakes!

For those who may be looking for a quick refresher, UBC made news back in 2011 when they became Canada’s first Fairtrade Campus. The Fairtrade Campus designation recognized their commitment to sourcing only Fairtrade certified ingredients wherever possible at all UBC Food Services locations. Because of this, there has been a big jump in Fairtrade certified sales, ranging from coffee to sportsballs to chocolate. This means a fair wage is being paid to farmers for their work; support for sustainable farming and fair labour practices around the world; and a big step in raising the bar for Fairtrade sourcing in Canada.

While UBC can proudly hold the title of Canada’s first Fairtrade Campus, they can no longer claim to be Canada’s only Fairtrade Campus. In the last year, both Simon Fraser University and the University of Guelph have also become Fairtrade Campuses! Our sources even tell us that there are a few campuses in Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec worth keeping an eye on, too.
