Ethical Bean Looks Back – Reflections from 2014

There’s nothing quite like having those few extra days away from work or school to give yourself the chance the relax, unwind, and look back on the year that’s passed. At Ethical Bean, we are no different.

To recognize the year gone by, we’re happy to present some of our favourite moments for 2014. All of these moments are made possible because of you, our fantastic customers, partners, suppliers, and community that we are so happy to say continues to grow year over year, and for that we stand tall and proud to say THANK YOU! Cheers to 2015!

We’re a Recertified B Corporation! One of our first orders of business for 2014 was to finalize our recertification – no easy feat for those who are not familiar with the process. We were audited and re-audited, and were able to highlight the areas where we do well, and where we can improve. It paved the way for a great year of partnerships with fellow B Corps!

Ethical Bean Coffee StationParticipation in our biggest events yet. This year we were able to support well over 100 events in and around the Vancouver area, including some of our biggest yet: Workout to Conquer Cancer in April, Ride to Conquer Cancer, and the July Subaru Vancouver Triathlon to name a few.

Recognition from our peers. In June we were finalists for the BCFPA’s Sustainability Award, then in September we were blown away by a triple-whammy of awards thanks to Fairtrade Canada where we won in two categories – Excellence in Consumer Education and as Licensee of the Year. We were thrilled for the staff at our Kootenay Street Café for taking Vancouver’s Favourite Fairtrade Café for the second year running.

We are so proud to have even the smallest association with so many motivated and inspiration change-makers in our community!

Company field trip to Seattle for The Event. When the SCAA (Specialty Coffee Association of America) comes to Seattle, the caffeinated masses at Ethical Bean (and pretty much every roaster in North and Latin America) pack their bags and head south of the border! We assembled a team of nine at Ethical Bean and attended workshops, cupping sessions, drooled over equipment on the trade show floor, and were wowed by the latte art and specialty drinks presented during the Barista competition. So fun!

website-sliderBiggest Giveaway Ever! The power duo of Holidays for Humanity and Flight Centre completely wowed us this year by offering an all expenses paid trip for two for our customers. It was the dream partnership for us. Holidays for Humanity are dedicated to building amazing vacation getaways that respect local culture, are as environmentally conscious as possible, and offer a component to volunteer and give back to the community.

bagreturn-image_web3Officially launched our Bag Return Program. We formalized our Bag Return Program with an incentive: return 12 empty Ethical Bean bags and we’ll reward you with a free bag or a coupon code for a free bag. It’s been great to continue discussions about our packaging, and continue to work with partners such as the Sustainable Packaging Coalition towards improvements that consider quali10693611_1508005566114266_2132848428_nty and the environment.

Rocket Fuel gets bigger. For years now shoppers at Costco warehouses have had the chance to enjoy Lush medium-dark and Bold dark roast in bulk, 2lb bags. We’ve long talked about doing another one of our eight roasts in a bigger bag and this year we got the chance: 2 lb Rocket Fuel! Turns out the lovechild of alchemy and dark combustion is exactly what many of you are looking for!

More locations than ever. Thanks to our partners across Canada we are available in more than 2000 locations in Canada, and south of the border down the coast in Washington, Oregon, California, and across to the Northeast and central states. We still operate out of our carbon neutral facility at 1315 Kootenay Street in Vancouver, package and ship everything from these doors.

New Roaster and a smaller footprint. The whole company was excited to hear that our decision to upgrade to a larger coffee roaster in May of this year would also reduce our environmental footprint. Our Loring Smart Roaster has allowed us to nearly double our output while reducing our environmental footprint by more than HALF!

All in all a banner year for Ethical Bean. Whether you live in Vancouver or enjoy one of our roasts from afar, we thank you for your support and for caffeinating with us. The future is caffeinated!
