When Ethical Bean Coffee heard the story of the espresso machine Tom Hanks recently sent to the US Press Corp, they decided to join in the fight for transparency.
“We followed the 2016 election, mostly by watching John Oliver, Bill Maher, Saturday Night Live and Canadian host Samantha Bee skewer Donald Trump”, said Lloyd Bernhardt, Ethical Bean Coffee CEO. “The American people need an ethical and truthful press now more than ever.”
Bernhardt went on to say that the administration’s protectionist leanings could hurt Fairtrade producers in the Global South as well as Canada and Mexico.
Ethical Bean Coffee sent one case of their Fairtrade Organic coffee to Washington and another to Tom Hanks.
About Ethical Bean
Ethical Bean Coffee is a leading roaster of 100% Fairtrade certified organic coffee. Co-founders Lloyd Bernhardt – recognized by Business in Vancouver’s “Top 40 under 40”, and Kim Schachte – an award-winning graphic designer, are committed to social responsibility, global awareness, and environmental accountability.
Their journey to Guatemala in 1999 to adopt their daughter forever changed their lives, sparking a passion for the culture of the country and inspiring a desire to better the lives of the farmers and families living and working in the coffee industry. The couple returned to Vancouver and in 2003 launched Ethical Bean Coffee.
As a founding Canadian Certified B Corporation, Ethical Bean meets higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. In action, each bag of Ethical Bean Coffee has a unique QR code where consumers can trace the entire crop to cup journey.
What began as a small operation with one employee has grown into an international success. Through this expansion, Lloyd and Kim have stayed true to their original commitment to make their coffee both just and better.
