OUR PHILOSOPHY
We believe in global responsibility. Ethical Bean purchases only Certified Fair Trade and Certified Organic coffees. It is important to us that coffee farmers are paid a living wage for their efforts, and that they can afford the basic necessities of life, like food, shelter, education and health care. Fair Trade is about ensuring a sustainable future for coffee growers worldwide.

At Ethical Bean, we know we are just one link in a chain. That's why we also ensure that all of our business practices align with those we do business with. We use the same set of criteria in choosing our business relationships, locally and internationally, that we do in selecting our coffee.

We believe in environmental sustainability. Ethical Bean roasts coffee that is grown with an eye for the environment. With a focus on organic, shade grown and bird friendly coffee, how and where our coffee is grown is important. Our suppliers strive to leave the smallest footprint and to preserve surrounding ecosystems.

OUR HISTORY
Lloyd Bernhardt and Kim Schachte established the Ethical Bean Coffee Company in Summer 2003 in Vancouver, British Columbia. It started with a deep, personal connection with Latin America. It grew out of a sense of social and environmental responsibility and a love of great coffee. Ethical Bean has quickly evolved into the Lower Mainland's fastest growing Certified Fair Trade coffee supplier.

OUR TEAM

Lloyd Bernhardt
Bernhardt is no stranger to the Vancouver business community. In 1988, he co-founded Motion Works, which became one of B.C.'s first and most successful Macintosh software development companies. Following Motion Works, which Bernhardt and his partner took public in the early '90s; he did a stint at Apple Computer in California where he consulted on Quicktime, a standard movie player for all personal computers. He continued working for a series of software development companies in Vancouver prior to shifting to launching Ethical Bean in 2003. A recipient of various excellence awards, Lloyd was honored to be included in the 1991 'Top 40 under 40 Achievers' (Business in Vancouver)

Kim Schachte
Kim is an award-winning graphic designer with a penchant for bold, modern design. She has owned and operated a design studio, and worked for a number of years as a senior designer at a leading Vancouver agency. She's responsible for Ethical Bean's corporate identity and packaging design.

Viren Malik
Viren is our big picture guy, practiced at the art of conversation, new father of twins and a heckuva nice guy. He thrives on partnership and brings cross marketing and creative expertise/ideas to achieve the mutual success of all involved. Viren was picked up by Whistler Water fresh out of school − Poli Sci degree gripped tightly in hand − to lead the company sales team as National Regional Manager. He was there to see the first case of water go out the door and in ten years, saw sales climb to $4.5 million a year.

"Isn't water free out of the tap?" you might be thinking. Could he be that good? Yes, yes he is.

Since a cup of coffee is 98.7% water it seems ironic he's been working the last decade in preparation for going the distance, and journeying the final 1.3% to becoming a coffee professional. In coming to Ethical Bean he has really just come home.

Give him a call to see what you could be doing with coffee or to revive what you've already started.

Michelle Sexton
Michelle grew up in the breathtaking beauty of Vancouver. She has always celebrated the opportunity to lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle. As the Retail Sales and Service Representative for Ethical Bean, she brings enthusiasm, drive, and excellent communication and organizational skills to the team. For the past 10 years, she has called vibrant and health conscious Kitsilano her home. Living in this beautiful area has led to a furthering of her interest and education in natural and sustainable foods and products. Throughout her career, her goal has consistently remained to offer the highest level of friendly, professional and personalized service to each of her clients, colleagues and suppliers alike.

Aaron De Lazzer (The Coffee Missionary)
Selected for his special blend of dashing good looks, dry wit and coffee expertise, Aaron De Lazzer, also known as the Coffee Missionary ("Brew the coffee of your convictions"), is the Director of Coffee here at Ethical Bean. Aaron adds insight to everything coffee, including green coffee selection, roast profiles and cupping. He inspires with his passion for uncompromisingly great coffee and leads with the knowledge of how to achieve it. Amen!

Jason Rennie
As production manager Jason takes the expertise and guidance of the quality, design and sales staff and turns it into the coffee you see on your grocery store shelf. He roasts the coffee, manages the packaging crew, maintains equipment and oversees the shipping/receiving as well as serves as occasional pinball whipping boy. He worked for many years in the cooperative sector and before that in manufacturing. He has been drinking coffee since he was 12 years old. It did not stunt his growth.

Jeff Linton
Despite originating in Ontario, Jeff remains hard not to like and has quickly become an integral addition to the "Dream Team" here at Ethical Bean. Disarmingly honest, we saved Jeff from a failed career in used car sales as one who subscribes to a "word as bond, handshake as good as a contract" type protocol. Old fashioned? Hardly. More of a vintage style. Tired of wasting time with all the horse traders in the coffee business? Give Jeff a call. He's a zephyr of expertise, insight and good old hard work with a solution driven approach to the needs of cafés and food service. See if what we do might be a good fit for what you're looking for.

Emily Sproule
Our very own "Emily the Strange"® bereft of dark tendencies yet not without her own viciously independent streak. Graduating from Simon Fraser University, Emily comes to us with a dual major in Business and Economics. Enigmatic, disarmingly friendly and appropriately sassy she is the Swiss Army knife of our sales and service team. She sweet talked her way into a job here in 2006 and has simply blossomed since then. Is it her naturally effervescent nature? Is it the bike commuting? Who cares? A customer service dream come true—answer your phone! Emily could be calling.

Gil Rinas
The Great White Hope, bringing a deft touch to the numbers and streamlined financials here at Ethical Bean. He makes pie charts dance in the dreams of our sales staff like quintessential sugarplums.

Add to this a requisite daily ration of coffee that is frankly, titanic.

Concerned? Indeed we are, but it certainly suggests a good fit, doesn't it?

Along with the other de rigueur personality traits that come bundled with an accountant: self-effacing, listens well, emotionally unavailable etc. etc. is Gil's atypical interest in "tuning" the family sedan. Ported, polished and chipped? Yes.

We're going to keep an eye on things.

Better business. Better taste. Better value. Better choice.

Just. Better.
